Summary

The Out-of-Sync Child broke new ground by identifying Sensory Processing Disorder, a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses。 This newly revised edition features additional information from recent research on vision and hearing deficits, motor skill problems, nutrition and picky eaters, ADHA, autism, and other related disorders。

Thorough and clear。 Provides useful checklists and tools to help your child。 Final chapter is very encouraging to parents who are facing this challenge。

Amanda Barstow

Great book for anyone looking to understand more about sensory processing。

Regis

Not a fan of this book。 I'm sure the author had good intentions, but much of the material was questionable。 Not a fan of this book。 I'm sure the author had good intentions, but much of the material was questionable。 。。。more

Absolutely helpful for understanding Sensory Processing Disorders

Great for explaining sensory processing disorder!

Definitions and explanations are good; there are lots of good examples。 Basically the help section is go get tested or try a sensory diet, though, so "meh" on that point。 Definitions and explanations are good; there are lots of good examples。 Basically the help section is go get tested or try a sensory diet, though, so "meh" on that point。 。。。more

This book has really helped me on my journey to understanding Sensory Processing Disorder。 The author encourages parents to seek professional guidance, and helps explain different ways SPD may present。

Well done, but aimed for children with more severe issues than my child。 Didnt finish

It focused more on the recognizing SPD side than coping with。 If someone is at the stage of first trying to understand their child and what's different, this could be helpful。 But if you already know spd (or spd/asd, spd/ADHD, etc) is the issue, it doesn't bring a lot of new information to the table。 The advice is very generic (yes, I already know I should tell my child I love them, thanks) It focused more on the recognizing SPD side than coping with。 If someone is at the stage of first trying to understand their child and what's different, this could be helpful。 But if you already know spd (or spd/asd, spd/ADHD, etc) is the issue, it doesn't bring a lot of new information to the table。 The advice is very generic (yes, I already know I should tell my child I love them, thanks) 。。。more

I have one child who I was struggling with。 Skimmed most of the book because much of it didn't apply to my situation: most beneficial was a few pages of lists of ideas to do with my child who needs lots of sensory input。 I have one child who I was struggling with。 Skimmed most of the book because much of it didn't apply to my situation: most beneficial was a few pages of lists of ideas to do with my child who needs lots of sensory input。 。。。more

This books offers valuable information for anyone who wants to learn more about the complex sensory system。 It gives detailed accounts of how the sensory system works, and what happens when it isn’t working。 It also provides examples for how to provide a balanced sensory diet for your child, and what to do if you think your child might have sensory processing disorder。

This book was excellent in giving general informations about the entire scope of SPD。 It’s overwhelming at first and this books helps to just lays out facts and scenarios to help you recognize different traits。 Now I just need to find a book more focused on my child (sensory seeker ) to go more in depth 。 If your just starting to learn about SPD this is a great starter book 。

This book was informative and helpful as a parent (especially a parent to 4 very different children with different needs & strengths)。 Def recommend to parents and educators everywhere!

Excellent resource on Sensory Processing Disorder! If you think your kid may have difficulty with lights, sounds, textures, balance, etc。, then get this book。 Understanding what your kid is going through is the first step in helping him。 And he doesn’t need a diagnosis or a serious issue for you to need help—and to get a better understanding through this book。

Tremendously helpful in writing my master's thesis on SPD。 This is the same book my mother read when she first set out to learn about my own sensory processing issues as a child。 Truly, one of the most informative books I've read on this subject! A must read if you suspect your child may have sensory differences。

Read this when it first came out while I was practicing vision therapy and behavior therapy。 Since there is OT overlap with both those therapies, it was incredibly helpful。

This book is full of fantastic information。 For me, though, it was information overload since I couldn't narrow down what my son's specific issues are。 I'll certainly keep it on hand as a resource for the future。 This book is full of fantastic information。 For me, though, it was information overload since I couldn't narrow down what my son's specific issues are。 I'll certainly keep it on hand as a resource for the future。 。。。more

There were some helpful ideas in this book for helping kids deal with anxiety--I can definitely see how it would be lifechanging for some people, but I found it more of a helpful adjunct to a million other interventions necessary in my parenting life。

Great book for kids who are quirky

Hannah

Very informative。 Good for all who care for children。

The fact parts were good, but the examples weren't great, and some of the information is very outdated。 The fact parts were good, but the examples weren't great, and some of the information is very outdated。 。。。more

Very helpful and have great insights to helping me with one of my children。 I liked techniques and ideas given for helping children with SPD, but the parenting strategies I really didn't care for。 Very helpful and have great insights to helping me with one of my children。 I liked techniques and ideas given for helping children with SPD, but the parenting strategies I really didn't care for。 。。。more

This was such an interesting view into the world of those who struggle with SPD, and a great reminder to be more patient with people。 You never know what someone else is dealing with。

Larkin Mcbath

It was very dry, well written and informative。 But for parents of kids on the spectrum or autistic or both, a must read to understand your little one better。

Christopher J Gill

Really insightful book。 Just remember when it was written

Sara

There is some good stuff in here, but so much woo that I cannot recommend it to anyone。

Katie

This book was really helpful for understanding more about out of sync children and how to help them。 It was approachable and organized in a way that I could find information specific to my situation。

Suzanne Moses

A helpful introduction to sensory processing disorder, but don't go in expecting detailed activities or ideas for your specific situation。 The detailed examples are a little repetitive, but they also help the reader begin to pinpoint the problems that their child does, and does not, have。 A helpful introduction to sensory processing disorder, but don't go in expecting detailed activities or ideas for your specific situation。 The detailed examples are a little repetitive, but they also help the reader begin to pinpoint the problems that their child does, and does not, have。 。。。more
